Cardboard Cities

This class at the Anderlecht Academy of Visual and Audiovisual Arts taught children aged ten to eleven to work together to build a city out of cardboard. I began the lesson by showing them images - references to inspire them - and by giving each group an identical cardboard square. The first step was to determine the city’s roads, but soon the students’ imaginations took over, and they came up with all kinds of buildings, places, and functions for their small section of the city: a factory, a skate park, a helipad, a pond. At the end of the lesson, all the squares were put together, revealing a diverse cardboard metropolis of their own making.
